Dvorak and Shostakovitch
Dvorak: String Quartet No.9, Op.34
Written in 1877 and dedicated to Brahms, this work is a joy to listen to. It begins with a sweeping waltz-like theme. The second movement is a jolly polka. The adagio is a sweet, syrupy, sentimental tune, and the finale is a Schubertesque romp. Easy to listen to at first hearing.
Shostakovich: String Quartet no. 2 in A major op. 68
This is the second of Shostakovich's fifteen quartets and in my humble opinion, one of the greatest. It was written in 1944, when Russia was on the upswing in WW2. The quartet begins with a robust, confident, rustic romp. The second movement is a gem, with an extensive solo violin recitative. A short waltz leads into the finale, a substantial theme and variations ending with a soaring climax.
