Pro Musica Quartet: Back to Haydn and Mozart

Pro Musica Quartet

Plays Haydn and Mozart

Friday, July 14th, 6pm

Leo Phillips Violin
Jirajet Jetsadachet Violin
Tasana Nagavajara Viola
Hut Wongwechwiwat Cello

Middle period works of Mozart and Haydn

Haydn String Quartet no 40, op.50 no. 5 'The Dream'
Haydn String Quartet no 41, op.50 no. 6 'The Frog'
Mozart String Quartet in no. 15 D minor, K421

This is the second round of Haydn and Mozart Quartets to be played at Eelswamp. Last year we had early quartets. This year we will hear middle period works. From Haydn we will hear two of the six opus 50 quartets; the two with silly nicknames 'Dream' and 'Frog'. Both follow the fast, slow, minuet, fast structure. Both have exquisite slow movements and exciting finales.

Mozart's D minor quartet is the second of the six quartets dedicated to Haydn. This is one of Mozart's most popular quartets, written in four movements. It begins with a rather dark and mysterious first movement and ends with a sophisticated set of variations.

The program has a fine balance: two light and exuberant Haydn quartets and one dark and serious work of Mozart. Book now by emailing asiachart(at)hotmail.com.

Reservations: 1,000 baht per person by email (asiachart(at)hotmail.com). All proceeds to the musicians.

Tickets: No tickets will be issued for concerts. Admission to the music room on the day of the concert will be in accordance with the sequence of receipt of payment (ie, who pays first goes in first and can select their desired seat).

Children: Children aged eight years and older may attend the concert depending on the suitability of the program. Smaller children may be left with the nanny on the premises.

Pro Musica April 2023 Dvorak and Shostakovich

Friday, April 28th, 6pm

Pro Musica Quartet plays Dvorak and Shostakovich

Leo Phillips, first violin

Anna Takeda, violin

Hut, cello and Tasana, viola

Dvorak and Shostakovitch

Dvorak: String Quartet No.9, Op.34

Written in 1877 and dedicated to Brahms, this work is a joy to listen to. It begins with a sweeping waltz-like theme. The second movement is a jolly polka. The adagio is a sweet, syrupy, sentimental tune, and the finale is a Schubertesque romp. Easy to listen to at first hearing.

Shostakovich: String Quartet no. 2 in A major op. 68

This is the second of Shostakovich's fifteen quartets and in my humble opinion, one of the greatest. It was written in 1944, when Russia was on the upswing in WW2. The quartet begins with a robust, confident, rustic romp. The second movement is a gem, with an extensive solo violin recitative. A short waltz leads into the finale, a substantial theme and variations ending with a soaring climax.

Reservations: 1,000 baht by email to asiachart(at)hotmail.com

Tickets: No tickets will be issued for concerts. Admission to the music room on the day of the concert will be in accordance with the sequence of receipt of payment (ie, who pays first goes in first and can select their desired seat).

Please do not fish for things in handbags during the performance. Muffle coughs as best you can but please don't unwrap sweets.

Children: Children aged eight years and older may attend the concert depending on the suitability of the program. Smaller children may be left with the nanny on the premises.

Cancellations and credits: Credit for future concerts will be allowed in the event of illness.
