Eelswamp Calendar 2018

Second half of 2018
Scroll down for a record of the first half of the year.

September 2018

Three M's: Mozart, Mendelssohn and Messiaen

Evgeny thrilled the audience playing Rzewski's 'People United' at Eelswamp last year

Evgeny Starodubtsev and Alexandra Lotova, piano solo and four hands

Friday 14th September

- Evgeny and Alexandra

Bach: Toccata in F Sharp Minor performed by Evgeny

Mozart: Sonata no.12 in F major, K332 and Sonata no.13 in B flat, K333, performed by Alexandra Lotova

Mendelssohn: Octet op.20, arranged for four hands by the composer, performed by Evgeny and Alexandra.

Sunday 16th September - Evgeny solo

Olivier Messiaen: Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jésus

Evgeny thrilled the audience last year with two performances of Rzewski's, "The People United". There is another epic masterpiece of the 20th century, Messian's 'Vingt Regards', or 'Twenty Visions of the Infant Jesus', written in Paris in 1944 (the time of the liberation from Nazi occupation). This remarkable work was inspired by religion. But it goes much further than a religious title would suggest, inspired by Liszt's late works, incorporating organic rhythms alluding to Stravinsky and a structure similar to Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. We are very fortunate to have a performance by a true artist of this grand inspiration.

Yevheniy Hepliuk is a Ukrainian pianist and composer. He was educated at the National Tchaikovsky Acadamy of Music in Kiev. Yevheniy won First Prize in the Ukrainian New Names Competition and First Prize in the National Competition, 'Con Amore Festum'. He is a member of the Ukraine National Composer's Union and is virtually unknown outside his home country. I was recently reminded that one of the original functions of Eelswamp was to discover unknown talent. Indeed, Mr Gugnin, our first international visitor to Eelswamp, was virtually unknown outside Russia when I discovered him. I hope you will find Yevheniy Hepliuk just as satisfying.

Beethoven, Sonata in F minor, op.57, Appassionata

Ligeti, Musica Ricercata. This is the highlight of the program. It was completed in 1953 by Hungarian composer Gyorgi Ligeti.

The work has eleven movements, each of which becomes progressively more tonally complex. The first movement starts with two notes albeit in different octaves, the second movement three notes and so on... until the 11th movement, which uses all 12 notes of the scale. The work is one of the great masterpieces of the 20th century. It appealed to Stanley Kubrick, who used one of the movements for his movie, 'Eyes Wide Shut'.
